Gutermann Shirring Elastic - 4009 Sunshine

£1.75

Shirring elastic for gathering, crimping and smocking.  Can also be knitted into welts for added elasticity.

Content: 36% polyurethane and 64% polyester.

Shirring elastic is a thin stretchy cord used to crreate gathered, elasticated effect on garments.  Use it on necklines, waistbands or cuffs, or even full bodices for your favourite shirred sundress look.

To use it with a sewing machine, use a standard thread as your top thread in the needle and hand wind the shirring elastic onto the bobbin with a not too loose not too tight tension. Increase your stitch length and increase your tension (you may need to experiment to get it just right), and sew rows of stitches to your project.

Once you're finished sewing all your lines, use your iron to apply steam to the fabric to make the elastic contract, creating a tight, figure hugging result (this is my favourite part - it's so satisfying!)
